CALGARY — The Big 3 of the Winnipeg Wesmen helped ensure they would live to play another day.
Kyanna Giles had 27 points, Faith Hezekiah 24 and Keylyn Filewich a double-double as the Wesmen women's basketball team outlasted the Mount Royal Cougars 77-65 in the Canada West conference women's basketball tournament Saturday night at MRU.
The Wesmen advanced to play the Fraser Valley Cascades Sunday night (8 p.m. CT).
Giles added eight rebounds and seven assists while Hezekiah grabbed seven boards and went 5-for-5 from the three-point line. Filewich had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Wesmen, who went 14-2 during the season but were seeded sixth in the conference bracket.
Maddison Hooper's 14 points off the bench led the Cougars (5-11) who also got 12 in a reserve role from Rachel Osczevski and 11 from Tanis Metcalfe.
The Wesmen, who trailed 18-15 after a quarter and led 33-32 at halftime, didn't get any type of breathing room until a quick 11-2 run early in the third quarter stretched the lead to 44-34. The Wesmen would go ahead by as many as 10 in that period and head to the fourth up 53-44.
The Cougars scored the first five points of the fourth but the Wesmen were able to get the lead back up to double digits when an Anna Kernaghan jumper with 6:39 remaining made it 60-50.
MRU made one more run, scoring the game's next seven points over the next 1:01 to cut the lead to three, and an Osczevski free throw with 4:38 left made it 62-60.
The Wesmen, however, gapped it again with an 11-0 run over the next 3:46 that sealed the deal.
