CALGARY — The Winnipeg Wesmen booked their long-awaited trip to the playoffs on Friday.
Thanks to a Calgary Dinos win over the UBC-Okanagan Heat in Calgary Friday night, the Wesmen women's volleyball team secured its first Canada West post-season berth since 2012.
Later on, the Wesmen dropped a straight-sets, but scrappy decision to the No. 4-ranked Mount Royal Cougars, 28-26, 25-20, 27-25.
The loss dropped Winnipeg's record to 9-13, but Calgary's win ensured the Heat cannot catch the Wesmen in the standings and the Dinos sets won/lost ratio will not be good enough to pass Winnipeg in the event of a tiebreaker.
Haille Bujan had eight kills and hit .333 for the Wesmen, who went on a 7-0 run in the first set to wipe out a 23-16 deficit and eventually force extra points.
In the third set, the Wesmen held a 23-20 lead but gave up four straight Cougar points.
The Cougars, the conference's No. 2 team, improved to 20-3 behind Nyadholi Thokbuom's 18 kills and .643 hitting. Cassidy Kitchen added 11 kills.
The two teams will meet in the final conference match of the season Saturday at 8 p.m., which can be seen live on canadawest.tv sponsored by Co-Op.
